All at the push of a button, the Roomba 980 robot vacuum gives you cleaner floors, throughout your home. Roomba 980 safely navigates an entire level of your home, keeping track of its location and recharging as needed until the task is done. You can connect the Roomba 980 to your home Wi-Fi network, and then download the iRobot Home app for iPhone or Android, which will allow you to set a cleaning schedule much more easily than through the buttons on top of the robot. The app will also provide some basic information about the robot and help with troubleshooting.
On top of the Roomba 980 there's a camera pointed forward and up at what appears to be around 45 degrees. VSLAM is a method of progressively building a map while monitoring your own situation simultaneously. To make a map, the camera snaps a photo, and afterward some extravagant programming searches for unmistakable examples of pixels in that image. For example, the VSLAM algorithm has picked out a bunch of features on a couch (corners of things are very distinctive), and the robot will remember what those features look like and keep track of them as it moves.
The robot will continue to take pictures, detecting and tracking new features and gradually building up a picture-based map of its environment. To localize itself, however, the robot needs to combine that map with odometer, and iRobot has added a new sensor to the bottom of the Roomba 980 to collect that data. Once the Roomba 980 knows exactly where it is, all sorts of new behaviors are made possible. It can vacuum in straight lines, enhance the efficiency of its coverage. It can shortcut back for the charger if it runs low on battery power, even if it’s in a distant room.

Roomba 980 vs. Roomba 985: Key Similarities

Roomba 980 vs. Roomba 985: Key Similarities Shape and Size

The first and most interesting similarity between Roomba 980 and Roomba 985 is that they’re completely similar in size and weight. Both models are almost 14 inches in diameter and 3.6 inches in height. This is the case with most Roomba models. The diameter of these two Roobmas is just perfect. They’re not too large to be cumbersome, and no too small to be ineffective. The height is just right, too. They’re just the good height to fit under most types of furniture

Identical feature Set

This is more than good news since there are some excellent features. We’ll point out just a few we found most interesting. Both Roomba 980 and Roomba 985 feature iRobot’s Gen 3 motors. These motors are ten times more powerful than those in Roomba 600 series. Another excellent feature is the dirt-detect technology. This technology utilizes an acoustic sensor to determine whether there’s an abnormally large amount of dirt on the floor and automatically adjusts the suction power. Both of these vacuum cleaners can be controlled via a smartphone app. The app allows you to set the schedule, check the battery, and control the Roomba automatically, amongst many other things.

Excellent Navigation

All products from iRobot, both Roomba 980 and Roomba 985 feature excellent navigation. Both Roombas utilize the same iAdapt 2.0 navigation System. This navigation system uses 15 different sensors to help Roomba navigate through the room. The best news about this navigation system is that it allows both Roombas to memorize one complete story of your home from the first go. This means both Roombas won’t need any additional inputs to vacuum your entire room without missing a spot.

Differences Roomba 980 vs. Roomba 985
Dual mode virtual wall barrier make Containment Easy

The Roomba containment is among the excellent. In terms of physical containment options, the towers they have produced and released over the years have always been at the top of the game. These infrared barriers work well, are affordable and can be used almost anywhere. The dual-mode virtual wall barrier uses infrared beams (linear, a straight beam of 10-feet, a ring with a 4-foot diameter) to prevent the robot from crossing. When the RCONN sensor on the top of the robot senses the infrared beam, it changes direction as if it has come into contact with a wall

Side Brush

The side brush helps Roomba collect dust more correctly. This side brush is essential for getting rid of the dirt that gathers up in the corners of the room and on the edges of the wall. The side brush is the one thing that breaks most often on Roombas. This is why Roomba 980 comes with one extra side brush. However, the same cannot be said for Roomba 985 that doesn’t come with an extra side brush

The price is the main difference between these Roomba 980 and Roomba 985. Roomba 980 cost just a bit shy from $450, while Roomba 985 costs almost $650. We don’t know why iRobot decided to price the Roomba 985 models so high since it comes with fewer accessories than the Roomba 980. The only reason why the 985 model is more expensive is that it has better build quality. However, we are yet to find any differences in quality between these two

Roomba 980 VS Roomba 985 Pros and Cons
  • Cleans Effectively
  • Easy To Use
  • Cleans Under Furniture
  • Hassle Free Operation
  • Long Run Time

  • Small Debris Bin
  • Noisy
  • Misses Spots
  • Long Charge Time
  • Clogs Easily

Your floors deserve the best clean possible. To keep them good at all times, it is recommended that you have a robot vacuum assist you between regular cleanings with your upright model. The Roomba 980 and Roomba 985 are among the best for this purpose. Both models handle all floor types, pet hair and spot cleaning. They also use advanced technology to thoroughly map and navigate your home, reducing collisions and cleaning in more human-like patterns. However, the 980 model comes with two virtual wall barriers and an extra filter and side brush. The slightly higher cost is warranted with these inclusions, and is therefore my pick for the better option.
